My 15 year old Niece has been doing hair for a few years, She helps out at a local salon after school, and keenly takes everything in. She has recently started dabbling in cutting hair, and has been using paper scissors .. so this Christmas I got her some proper hairdressing scissors... of course she was most excited and very keen to use them... so she asked if I would like her to cut my hair.
She has straightened my hair on many occasions, and I have always been impressed with her talent and flair, so I didn't have a problem in letting her fix my hair up. just a little bit.
The rest of the family had moved to the lounge to digest their Christmas dinner in front of the television, and we were left in the kitchen. My niece placed a stool for me to sit on, and draped my shoulders with a cloth. She stood in front of me with her new scissors, moving them comfortably in her hands. As she looked at my hair, she began to flick it around with her fingers, trying different looks. She had never discussed what she was doing when she straightened my hair, and this seemed no different. I automatically trusted her. She came to stand behind me and gently positioned my head so that my chin was on my chest, and she began to cut.
I felt the cool new scissors hard against my neck, and heard the first "schnick" as she confidently made the first cut. I was relaxed, and we talked as she continued to cut the hair at the base of my neck. She moves the scissors gently up the back of head, continuing to make gentle cuts. I could feel the hair gently tickling my neck as it fell. When she had finished the back, I assumed she would stop. satisfied to have had a play around with her new scissors. But she didn't stop, she moved to the sides.
It wasn't until she stood beside me that I realised there was no mirror in the kitchen, and I couldn't see what she was doing. It didn't really seem to matter, but it wasn't until I saw the first pieces of hair cascading onto my elbow that I realised that she was cutting more than a little bit off. I had a chin length bob which was longer in the front, so it seemed natural that there was more hair to cut in the sides than there had been at the back. She was continuing to cut with confidence, so I forgot all about the lack of mirror.
She continued to cut the hair on the side, using her fingers as a cutting guide. I saw more and more of my once chin length bob sitting on the cloth draped over my shoulders but was more fascinated by her confidence than I was alarmed by the growing pile of hair. Once she had finished with the right side, she moved to the left. It was fascinating to watch her eyes flick from side to side, comparing and adjusting her cuts. I was becoming curious as to what she had planned, and as she moved to stand in front of me, she asked if I would like a fringe. I said that it sounded interesting so she came to stand in front of me.
I must admit to a slight tremor as I looked up in time to see the scissors positioned just below my eyebrows and ready to cut. Once again I heard the "schnick" of the new scissors, but this time I saw about 5 inched of my dark hair cascade past my nose to land on my lap. I knew that I was now committed to a fringe, so I sat still and watched as she continued to cut in front of my eyes.
I knew
without a doubt that I no longer had a bob at all, and was now keen to see what her plan was.
She moved beside me, and I felt the blade of the scissors press against my ears. I could almost hear each individual hair being cut as she shaped the hair around my ears. Once again, I noticed the longest of the hairs of my bob sitting curled gently in my lap. By the time she had cut around the other ear, the pile of hair on the floor was quite substantial. She stopped cutting and stood in front of me, admiring her creation. It was obvious that she had completely restyled my hair.
I couldn't get to a mirror without first passing through the rest of the family in the lounge, so once my niece had removed the draped cloth, and fliffed my hair a bit, I walked into the lounge with a flourish and a loud "Ta Dah!" There was a collective gasp!!! The transformation was obviously noticeable, and as soon as the family realised what had happened while they had been watching television, they began to comment. They agreed that it was amazing. They asked if I was happy with it, and were astonished when I told them that I hadn't seen either the transformation or the result yet.
I walked into the bathroom to where the mirror was, took one look. and gasped!! The transformation was dramatic to say the least. It was quite unnerving to look in the mirror and not know what to expect. My reflection no longer had a chin length bob. I was expecting not to see it after seeing so much of my hair sitting in my lap and on the floor. but I now had a fringe. My ears peeped seductively from the newly shaped style. I now had short hair , very short hair. considerably shorter than chin length. It was now not much more than an inch at its longest. I reached up and touched my now short hair. It felt great.. and it looked fantastic!! I loved my new look.
So this Christmas, two people had an unexpected present. My niece had a client with unfailing confidence in her sense of style, her talent and her ability, and I had the total delight of seeing a total transformation. complete with the big reveal! If I ever go to another hairdresser again, I think I'll sit with my eyes closed so I can once again experience the unexpected transformation. I know that she will go a long way in her hairdressing career, and I will also know that I started it all with her first pair of hairdressing scissors.
Next year I think I'll get her some thinning shears. or heaven forbid. some clippers. but you'll have to wait until next year to hear how that works out!
