As Lisa walked quickly along the plaza leading the front entrance of her office building, she noticed her reflection in the large, plate glass windows. She liked what she was seeing. She saw an attractive woman in her 30’s who was dressed well and looked great! Lisa thought she still had a nice figure and really liked the new hair style she was wearing these days
She had been letting it grow out a little from the ultra short bowl style she had gotten a few months ago. Lisa remembered well the experience at Salon Tropez with Ray Valmeri, the new stylist she had tried. It had been a spur of the decision, when she just decided to cut her long hair into a short, easy to manage style. Ray, with his dark blue eyes and fingers stroking her hair, had almost hypnotized her into letting him cut her even shorter than she intended. He had done this twice. After the second time, Lisa opted to go back to her original salon even though her usual stylist had moved away.
Lisa did love how Ray worked with her hair during the cut, and did like the feel and look. The problem was a few days later she was always regretting the shorter cut. Since growing it out during the past month or so, it was now the length and style she originally intended. More of a blunt cut, with short sides and back, with it longer on top. But there was something about Ray. The haircut experience was outstanding, if the cut wasn’t really what she wanted.
As Lisa was rounding the corner, ready to enter the building to her office, she encountered a large group rushing out. To avoid hitting them, she cut the corner sharp and ran straight into a guy coming the other way.
“Oh! I’m so sorry.” She exclaimed, putting her hands up to her face.
“No it’s my….Lisa? Is that you?”
She realized it was Ray. The man she had just been thinking about. What a strange coincidence.
Ray smiled and held out his hand in greeting.
“Hey it’s great to see you again. I’ve missed you.”
“Yea. I’ve been pretty busy these past few months. Flying all around as you can tell.”
The both grinned at each other. And Lisa was struck by how deep and blue Ray’s eyes seemed today. Even better looking outdoors than in that dark salon where she had always seen them before.
“You know, I didn’t recognize you right away. You’ve let your hair grow out.”
“Yes. I’ve been going to a salon close to my home. It’s just been a little easier for me to get into lately.”
“I was worried you were mad at me or that you didn’t like my service.”
“No, no it’s not that. I’ve just had so many things to deal with lately, it’s just easier for me to use this other salon.”
“Well give me a call one of these days and let me work my magic on you again.”
“I will. I’ll do that.” Lisa stammered.
“All right then,” he said and turned and walked away.
Lisa stood and watched him move across the plaza to the entrance of Salon Tropez. It was amazing to her what she was feeling right now. She felt like she wanted to go up to her office and call about an appointment for haircut. It was strange because she had just gotten her hair trimmed only 10 days ago. But this was the kind of effect Ray had on her. Lisa wondered if all Ray’s customers felt like this. She would have to ask that girl from her building who had first recommended Ray. Lisa wondered if she felt the same.
With that, she turned and walked into the building. Ready for another adventure in the American business world.
Later on as Lisa was returning from lunch, she saw the young woman from the corporate offices who Lisa had originally talked to about Ray. She decided to take a minute and ask her about “The Ray” effect as she was beginning to think of it.
“Hi! I don’t know if you remember me, but a few months ago you recommended a hair stylist to me.”
“Oh! Hi! I didn’t recognize you. I like your hair by the way.”
“Thank-you. I just wanted to ask you a question about Ray, the stylist? I just wanted to ask..” But she didn’t get to finish as the woman cut her off.
“You want to know if I like the how he makes me feel during the haircut.”
“That’s right, how did you know?”
“Well I know another woman who gets her hair cut by Ray and we talked about the same thing just a few weeks ago. Personally, I LOVE how he makes me feel and really could care less what he does to my hair. I think it looks great!”
“Don’t you ever feel like he’s not listening to what you want done? I mean, doesn’t it bother you that he just does what he wants?”
“Frankly no. I’ve learned to trust his judgement. And I love how my hair looks and I really enjoy how he makes me feel during the haircut. It’s almost as good as sex. Don’t you agree?”
Lisa had to admit she had a point there.
“Listen, I gotta get going. It was really good talking with you again!” With that Lisa turned to the elevators and hurried to back to her office.
That afternoon as she sat at her desk and reviewed notes from a morning meeting, she found herself messing with her bangs. Lisa had let the bangs grow out quite a bit since Ray had cut her hair. They now reached a little passed her eyebrows, which is quite a bit longer than they had been. And this afternoon they were down right bugging her. Maybe she should have her stylist cut shorter bangs next time.
When the work day was over and she was walking out of the building onto the plaza, she heard someone call out her name. As she put up her hand to block out the sun that was in her eyes, she realized someone was calling to her from across the plaza. So she started walking toward where she heard the voice coming from, still shielding her eyes from the sun. As Lisa got closer, she realized it was Ray who had called her. He was standing outside the salon, waving to her and smiling. Since she wasn’t in a big rush, she figured she’d at least stop to find out what he was calling her about.
“Hey there Lisa! I thought that was you coming out of the building. I just wanted to check with you about setting up your next hair appointment.”
Lisa instinctively started brushing the hair out of her face again. “Gee, I hadn’t really thought about that yet. I just had it cut only a week or so ago.”
“Yea but whoever did it, didn’t do a good job. You shouldn’t have to keep brushing the hair out of your face like that. I really wish you’d let me give you a proper haircut.”
“Well yea…Maybe. Let me give you a call later in the week to set something up.”
“Lisa, why don’t you stop into the salon right now and I’ll just trim those bangs so they aren’t bothering as much.”
Lisa brushed at her bangs again and thought about it a second. Just trimming the bangs couldn’t hurt. And she had a few minutes right now.
“Why not. I have time I guess.”
“Great! Follow me and I’ll work my magic on you.”
As they walked together across the plaza to the door of the salon, Lisa couldn’t help but thinking she was making a mistake with this. But then, she knew she would enjoy the feel of Ray running his fingers through her hair and gazing down on her with those dark, steel blue eyes of his.
Once inside the shop they continued to the rear and Ray’s familiar cubicle. She seated herself in the chair, which as usual was facing the floor to ceiling mirror behind. As she sat, Ray came up behind her and placed the usual black cape around her. Lisa was a little surprised by this.
“You’re just trimming my bangs. Right?”
“Sure. I just don’t want to get the hair all over your clothes.”
Lisa settled back in the chair as Ray began combing through her hair, ever so soft and gentle. She could feel herself becoming drowsy as she usually did. Then Ray was combing the hair on the front of her head. Next Ray had the scissors in his hand and began to cut the bangs straight across, above her eyebrows. But as he started, Lisa could see that he would be cutting the bangs quite a bit shorter than just above her eyebrows. He looked to be cutting them more than an inch and half above her eyebrows.
“Hey!!” She protested. “That’s a lot shorter than a little trim.”
“Sh-sh-sh. Let me finish.”
But as he continued cutting, she knew she wasn’t going to be happy with her bangs that short. They would look out of place with the rest of her hair. Lisa would have a normal, rather stylish blunt cut on the sides and back. With shorter than normal bangs in front. It made her look dumb and she told him so.
“Ray, I’m not really happy with my bangs this short. They don’t fit with the rest of the style”
“Not to worry. I’m not done yet.”
And with that he was reaching for those silver clippers on the hook just under the counter. Lisa heard the familiar pop and light buzzing they made. She didn’t know if she was in shock, a trance or what, but she put up no fight what-so-ever.
He eased himself close to the right side of her head, tilted it to the left slightly, and brought the clippers with no guard, straight up the side of her head in front of her ear. Lisa could see the hair falling away and the clippers proceeded upward, higher and higher. She was surprised but not disturbed to see Ray was moving the clipper high up to the crown of her head. It was going to indeed be a shorter than her last haircut, but funny thing was, she did mind anymore.
Ray moved the clippers along over the top of her ear, then behind. Once he had completed shaving all the hair from the side of her head. He moved behind her chair and eased her head forward so her chin was touching her chest. She felt those the glorious clippers slide easily into her hair, and she felt the soothing vibrations as Ray moved them up the back of her head. Again he went right up to the crown.
Then he moved to her left side and in front of her ear moved the clippers up the side of her head. A few second later she sat starring at a woman she hardly knew anymore. She was looking at an attractive, thirty something woman, with a head devoid of any hair below the crown of her head. Lisa thought it strange, but somehow the shorter bangs seemed to fit now. It all seemed to work together.
Then Ray was at work again, using the comb over scissors to cut the top of her head. He was blending and tapering the hair on top, into the shaved sides. Lisa had to work hard to keep from falling asleep. It was funny how relaxed she felt. She really should be upset, but as usual she was really enjoy the haircut Ray was giving her.
Once he had finished and satisfied with the length on top, Lisa heard the whirring of the shaving cream dispencer and knew what was coming next. Ray would be giving her a straight edge shave over the sides and back of her head. She closed her eyes as Ray smoothed the warm foam over the sides and back of her head and proceeded to sharpen the razor on a leather strap. The he was shaving the sides and back of Lisa’s head.
Lee loved the feel of Ray’s hands holding her head and the feel of the razor sliding down her skin in smooth, even strokes. All too soon he was done and wiping the sides and back of her head with a warm, soft towel.
Then he held his hand mirror up behind Lisa’s head so she could see her new hairstyle. She should be positively irate with him, but Lisa couldn’t help but admire how good she looked. Short hair like this really did highlight her face. And with her bangs now cut high on the forehead, it really did bring a lot of focus to her beautiful green eyes.
“So what do you think?”
“I..I..I don’t know what to say.”
“Is that good or bad?”
“Good I think. I mean, I do like how I look. But in a week or so it will be the same old thing. I’ll be wondering what the heck I was thinking to let you do this.”
“It’s because you don’t trust me enough. You need to trust me more, and believe that I would never do anything that would make you look bad. I’m all about bringing out the real you. The real Lisa.”
Ray used his brush on her forehead, around her ears and in back to remove any stray hairs, then he pulled the cape from around and let a fair amount of hair fall to the floor. As Lisa stood, her hand moved quickly to the back of her head so she could feel the smoothness of her skin there. She moved her hand high up on the back of her head. This was the strangest haircut yet, but somehow still very attractive. And very neat.
As they walked to the front of the salon, Lisa started wondering when the trance would fade – when reality would set in. Would it be tomorrow or next week when she would begin to hate the haircut? As quickly as the thought came, it was replaced by a feeling of total pleasure and satisfaction. Nothing else mattered except that she felt and looked great.
How could Ray think she didn’t trust him. She trusted him completely.
“While I’m here Ray, why don’t we set up another appointment.”
“Sounds good to me. How does two weeks sound?”
Lisa just smiled.
