She wants someone who will gently brush her mid-back length hair, from the end up, gently removing the tangles. Someone who will lovingly pull her hair back into a braid -tight, but not painful.
She wants someone to lead her out to the car, open the passenger door for her. Someone who will kiss her cheek and whisper about the surprise they have planned for her.
She wants someone to gently lead her into the old fashioned barbershop. The shop with the black and white tile floors, the single imposing chair, the older man working on a customer.
When she squeaks softly in surprise, she wants someone to gently kiss her cheek and help her sit in one of the waiting chairs. Someone who will tell her that if she’s a good girl, she’ll get a reward.
When the barber finishes his customer and calls “Next!", she wants someone who will walk her over to the large chair and help her sit back in the warm leather, smiling encouragingly at her.
When the barber wraps the strip of paper around her neck and fastens the cape securely, she wants someone to squeeze her shoulder and pull the barber aside. She wants someone who will speak quietly to the barber, telling him exactly what to do. She wants someone who will make sure she can’t hear them … can’t hear what’s coming next.
When the scissors start snipping through her braid at the base of her skull, she wants someone who will smile at her, urging her to be good. And when the long braid is dropped into her lap, and the tears well up in her eyes, she wants someone to nod their head, indicating there is more to come.
And when the barber turns the clippers on, she wants someone who will chuckle, just a little, when she jumps. Nothing so loud or so vicious has ever touched her hair.
She wants someone who will lean back against the counter and watch as her head is pushed down to her chest and the clippers blaze a trail up the back of her head. When the clippers stop just at the top of her ears, and she breathes a small sigh of relief, she wants someone who will lean over and pat her knee lovingly.
When she can finally lift her head, and sees herself in the mirror for the first time, she wants someone who will tell her that everything is okay, and that she will look beautiful.
When the barber begins working, first with the scissors, then the clipper and comb, she wants someone who will nod and show their approval, telling the barber to take it a bit shorter, to take the taper a bit tighter.
When she feels the warm lather, then the razor, along her hairline and over each ear, she wants someone who will hum their approval, telling the barber just how perfect it looks.
And when the barber is finally done, the cape is removed, and she’s getting her first look at the short back and sides with the severe part, she wants someone who will assist her out of the chair and give her a sweet kiss, telling her how good she’d been.
After the barber has been paid and they’re leaving the barbershop together, and a cool breeze hits her freshly bared nape, she wants someone to pull her close, and warm her nape by wrapping an arm around her shoulders and tucking her against them protectively.
When they finally get home, she wants someone who will kiss her neck, her hairline, that little sensitive spot behind her ear, making her shiver in delight.
And after they’ve made love, she wants someone who will stroke her shorn nape, caressing her head until she drifts off to sleep, knowing she was a good girl.
