This story starts as a meeting on the Internet. Tricia was introduced to me by Nancy as one who wanted to talk about certain problems. Since I have a degree in counseling, I talked with Tricia about what she wanted to talk about.
Tricia’s Avitar, was a picture of herself, I asked what she looked like as the avitar was very small, where by Tricia sent me a larger picture. The picture was of Tricia, she was seated on the couch, Tricia appeared to be a woman who was about (50-60), she was wearing a Black Vest and had two large braids, that fell over each shoulder, to her waist an then disappeared into the couch.
I replied back: “I like the look, reminds me of an older woman, some years ago that I knew, who was a Biker Mamma. “ Tricia laughed back to me and said; “I use to ride bike with my ex years ago so I guess I could be Biker Mamma." As time went by, we talked about her problems and life in general. On more then one occasion, over the course of 2 months, Tricia would talk about cutting her braids off and donating them to a friend whose wife had died, he was a beautician and made wigs from the cut hair. I said why not if your sick of it long, and have had it long for 7-8 years, then maybe it is time for a change. Tricia said she wanted to cut it all really short, as she had always wanted to do, but; when they asked how short, she would chicken out and say shoulder length.
My reply one day was “Well how short are you talking?" Tricia replied “ A really short Crew cut, about ¼“ or shorter." As I talked to Tricia, she was serious about wanting a crew cut, but; due to her religious beliefs about long hair, about a woman’s crowning glory, she felt it almost sacrilegious to cut it that short, why what would others think of her? I told her that over the years I had personally done makeovers, one was actually from knee length (48") to a very short ¼" crew cut. Tricia was amazed; “Really, a woman went from that length to short and nobody said anything?" I told Tricia; “How old are you Tricia, stop asking yourself for permission to this, if you want to do it, then do it. It is your hair, your life, your moment to do what you want to do, but; you have to do want you want to, not what you think everyone else, or what you think everyone else wants you to do." Tricia said “Your so right OC, it is my life and I am not getting any younger."
The next day Tricia while e-mailing, said; “ I have an appointment to get my hair cut and donated on February the 14th, Valentines Day." My reply was; “Great, now keep to your promise to yourself to do what you want to do and do not tell anyone." The e mail back was a big hug a kiss and a smile with OK.
February the 14th finally came but; Tricia was sick and could not get out to her appointment. I talked for a while and said well Don (husband) could do it at home. Tricia replied “Yes he could, we have scissors, a clipper set I cut his hair with, OH OC you’re a genius." About an 3 hours went by, Tricia came back on line and sent me the before haircut picture, her hair was unbraided, it fell down to about the top of her thighs, a second shot showed Tricia with a braid in hand, and her hair cut to shoulder length, a third photo showed the braids packed into a plastic bag for shipment to the beauty salon, the 4th photo was Tricia, her hair was about ¼“ long and the biggest smile on her face.
I said; “Well ya did it Sis, ya cut it your way." Tricia typed back to me the following:
“ Did like you said OC; We combed the hair out and I got a picture of the final day of long hair, getting too old to keep it up anymore and too tired of it long. Don then sat me into the kitchen chair, we used a bed sheet as a cape. I braided the hair into the two braids to be cut off. Don looked at me and said; “Here we go", as he raised the scissors and started cutting the first braid off, snip, snip, snip, snip as the scissors crunched through the hair, about 6 snippets and it was severed. Really I do not know who was having more fun, me or Don, it was so awesome, as we moved onto the next braid and about 7 snips, it was it was severed, gone were my two braids in my hands, I looked at them and wondered why have I not done this before, every woman should do this once in her lifetime, the freedom I felt from the non weight of all the hair to having done what I wanted to do for seven years.
Now that both braids were cut and put into a plastic one gallon baggie, I looked at Don and said; “Now comes something I have always wanted to do, but; have always been too afraid to do it." Don looked at me and said; “You can top here if you want to?" I said “No if I do now, I will just grow it back out long again and never really cut it all off like I want to do.“ Don said “ OK “ as he put the ½" guard onto the clippers, then he turned the clippers on and said “Now ya gonna look like me Tricia, we will both be bald, a matching couple." I said “Do it." Don raised the clippers up to my head and started cutting, I watched as the hair fell off like a snow plow cleaning the streets clean. I was kind of in awe at seeing my scalp as the clippers made its passes and more hair piled up on the cape and the kitchen floor beneath me. It seemed like no time had gone by and I was bald, a ¼" cut accomplished. OC you will never know how much I have wanted to do this, but never did, till you told me, it would be Ok to do. A woman has to decide what to do, not society nor a church, nor a husband, should get in a persons way, of doing something they want to do, that is legal of course."
Tricia was so excited she was beside herself. That Sunday she went to church and to her amazement, all the ladies at the church said how beautiful she looked with her hair short crew cut hair cut. A few who had wanted to do the same, took the wisdom from Tricia and had theirs cut also. Tricia said what a thrill to do, It is truly better to give, then to receive, and look what happened OC, others whom had never thought about cutting their hair, were inspired by me and cut theirs short also, Yes God does work in mysterious ways.
