It was their senior year at highschool. They were the best soccer team the school ever had and they were on the brink of winning the district championship with just one game to go. If they won district they would be going to the state championship, and if they won state it was a sure bet that at least two players would get full scholarships to university. Billy was perhaps the best player, although his best friend Mark was acknowledged as perhaps the best Goalie in the whole state. The other 9 players on the team were also at the top of their game and gave their best during practice and play. And they did play as a team. They also seemed to hang together all of the time. They had just won their game that put them in the final and they huddled together to congratulate each other. Someone suggested that they do something special if they won the district championship. Like what someone else asked. Well, we are the Hawks, if we win, let's all get a mohawk to celebrate. Several sounded off that it would be cool, if their parents would let them. How about you Billy? If everyone else does, I will, he said. Billy wasn't only the teams captain, best player, but also a strapping 6 foot 2 inch tall with a young athletes body, and shoulder length blond hair that he loved because his girl also liked it. Billy wasn't really afraid for his hair, he knew his friend Mark and his mother only too well. Mark himself was a handsome dude, although his hair wasn't long, it was kept very neat and parted on one side. There was no way Marks mom would allow her boy to get a mohawk. And, they still hadn't won the championship yet. The team they were going to play was the team they had expected to play; the Jays had held their match to a draw earlier in the year and otherwise both teams hadn't lost a match. This game would not come to a draw, it had to be won to get to state, even if it meant overtime.

Billy didn't bother to even ask his parents he was so confident that Mark wouldn't get permission. He even reminded Mark to ask. Saturday was the District Championship Match. In the excitement no one thought too much about the haircut, only of winning. Mark neglected to tell his best friend that his mom had very reluctantly given permission. It was his senior year and he was an honor student, and the rest of the guys were gonna do it. And, no, if they jumped off a cliff, he wouldn't follow. But it would grow back.

It was a hard fought match, the Hawks won by a score of 4 to 3 with Billy kicking in the final goal in the last minute of the game. They all jumped and whooped and grabbed each other. Their girls ran out to congratulate them and to dance round and round with them. Their parents were all excited and happy. Then they separated into the clubhouse to take a shower and get changed. Marks mom handed him a rather small black leather case, not much bigger than a camera bag, he said thanks and told her it would be all right. I can't believe I agreed to this she said to herself as she turned away. But then, she had done a couple of crazy things when she was in her senior year too.

Mark caught up to Billy as they all entered into the club house. What you got, asked Billy. My mom borrowed her brothers barber clippers from his shop. She said if we won and were going to do this we should at least have a good pair of clippers. Billy stopped. He was stunned. Your mom agreed, he blurted out. Yeah, replied Mark, she said everyone was entitled to at least one crazy thing before they graduated. Oh no, said Billy. I didn't think your mom would agree, so I didn't even ask my folks. They'll skin me alive. I'm gonna go take my shower quick he thought and get out before they start doing this.
The team gathered round as Mark took out the clippers. Billy should be first, said one, he's our Captain and won us this game with that last shot. Billy had already taken his shirt off and was getting ready to strip down for the shower. They gathered round him and he tried his best to get out of it. He protested, but they reminded him that he said he would if they all did, and they all were going to, Billy was just going to be first. They took him over to the a chair that was near an electric outlet. Mark plugged it in and said he would do the honors, then Billy could do his mohawk.

Billy was forced to sit down, when he tried to get up, they told him they would hold him down or perhaps tie him into the chair. Take it like a man, they chided him. "Hold your head still" said Mark as he snapped on the clippers. The clippers were Wahl 000000 balding clippers. They didn't make a loud noise but hummed quietly, their small sharp smooth blades ready to remove hair down to skin level.

Mark

placed the blade about an inch left of center at Billy's front hairline. Billy felt the vibration as the blades moved from front to back across the top of his head. Then just to the right of center. Billy's long blond hair slid down over his back and shoulders landing quietly on the floor. Down one side then the other and very quickly it was done. Mark thought he should shorten the top down to about 2 inches too, but leave it long, like a horse tail in the back. It took a couple more minutes to go along each side of the mohawk and make sure that it was a straight line. Perfect, said Mark as he switched off the clippers.

Get up. Your turn to do my head, he said as he put the clippers into Billy's hand. I've never done this before said Billy. You know what a mohawk is supposed to look like, said Mark. Just leave a strip down the center. And please, do make it down the center and not off to one side, he laughed as he said it. Billy snapped them on. It's a good thing you are my best friend and that you trust me, he thought, otherwise I'd skin you bald. How could his mother have not only let him, but had provided the instrument. He made short work of Marks head. The mohawk was only about 1 ½ inch wide and tapered to a point in the back. Someone took a 1 inch guard out of the bag and told Billy to put it on the clippers and go over Marks mohawk so it would stand up. After Mark was done Billy handed the clippers to another team member and he and Mark went to see their haircut and get their shower. My mom's gonna cry and my Dad is gonna be mad because my mom is crying; I'm gonna catch hell when I get home. I still can't believe your mom let you do this. They finished their shower and were getting dressed for the ceremony. We're gonna look silly with a suit and tie and a mohawk, said Billy as he pulled on his white shirt.

Billy was in for another surprise as he came back out into the big room. His dad was there, and he was helping to cut the mohawks. What the heck, Billy said to Mark. Mark laughed. I called your dad when my mom said I could get a mohawk. You know my dad couldn't be here so I thought your dad would, as I feel sometimes like I'm part of your family. Billy's dad saw him and waggled his finger for him to come over where he was cutting hair. "Couldn't wait for me, he asked. Who cut your hair? They did a pretty good job. Hi Mark. Is this your handiwork? Wish I had a picture of Billy's face when he saw me here. Oh, he is in trouble. Can't bother to ask his parents, just does what he pleases." And he laughed louder at Billy's discomfiture. "It's ok son," he said. "But, as you guessed, your dear mom isn't real happy. You might go out and give her a kiss and ask her forgiveness. She won't be too hard on you, maybe." He gave another laugh and turned back to his hair cutting duties. "Next," he called out.

Billy's mom wasn't happy. But she smiled her smile through it. The school principle and the athletic director weren't happy either, but there wasn't much they could do with what was a done deal, and, besides they were the district champions. At the ceremony each boy on the team was presented with a gold medal. Billy was given another medal for the most valuable player and in a surprise, his best friend Mark was also presented with a most valuable player medal.

The team talked the school principal and the athletic director into letting them keep their mohawks until after the state championships which was in two weeks. Their team picture was taken and in later years they would all point out the mohawk haircuts they got as a reward for being the district champs. After they won the state championship the team was allowed to keep the mohawk haircut until the graduated, as long as the whole team kept a mohawk. That was harder because many of the parents had given permission thinking it was a one-time thing and the boys would quickly grow their hair back. Somehow they all made it to graduation with their mohawk haircuts. Billy kept his horsetail usually braided in a single braid, except when he got dressed up for church or a dance, then he let it loose. He also let it grow longer.

After graduation, at the graduating senior party, the boys got up on stage and each one had his mohawk shaved off using the Wahl clippers. Billy's girl tied a ribbon around his horsetail and when it was cut off, kept it . They used shaving gel, lathering each head, and Mach III razors to give their heads a smooth finish.
