New Year, New Look

“So Charissa, the word on the street is you’re thinking about cutting your hair." Said her co-worker, Lauren.

“Where’d you get that idea?" Charissa responded.

“That’s what Marissa told me, she said you asked if she had time to cut your hair." Lauren replied.

“Ohh yeah, just a trim, I don’t know any stylists here and I know everyone at this office goes to Marissa so I thought I’d give her a shot. You know I’ll never actually cut my hair." Charissa said.

Charissa and Lauren are the receptionists for an office suite that hosts a multitude of private businesses. Their floor had everything from a lawyer, to a jeweler, to a hairstylist.

Charissa is the new girl in town, she just moved to Bristol from Seattle and is clearly the prettiest girl in the office. She is the perfect receptionist: smart, quick, and incredibly gorgeous. She is a cute and small girly girl who is always dressed immaculately. Standing 5 foot 6 inches tall, she has a body that would make any man go wild and piercing blue eyes. The best feature about her though is her hair, everyone that passed through the office either told her how beautiful it was or asked how she got it to be that beautiful.

Not so surprisingly, Charissa’s pride and joy is her hair. It is a simply magnificent. Perfect bright blonde that has never been touched by dye and a perfect wave to it that made it look like she worked on her hair for hours. Her hair touches her belt loop when straight, and the small of her back when down naturally. Always in perfect health, never a hair out of place, her hair was simply amazing and the envy of the entire office suite.

“So when is your appointment with Marissa?" Lauren asked.

“2 o’clock." Charissa responded.

“Only an hour and a half away…getting nervous?" Lauren asked slyly.

“No, why would I be?" Charissa asked.

“Well your hair is just so amazing I figured you were the kind of girl who hated getting their hair cut." Lauren said.

“I definitely am petrified of haircuts, but today I’m not getting a cut, she’s just going to give me a consultation." Charissa responded.

“Oh ok, that makes more sense. Well enjoy that, she gives the best scalp massages." Lauren said.

“Great!" Replied Charissa. “That’s the only part of haircuts I enjoy, but I doubt I’ll get one just for a consultation."

The hour and a half went by almost instantly and it was time for Charissa to make the short walk over to Marissa’s office/hair studio. When she got in, she couldn’t believe how nice it was. The room was furnished with a beautiful wash station and a gorgeous black leather chair. She stood there admiring until Marissa got up from her desk.

“Ready for your consult?" Marissa asked.

“Yeah, let’s do this." Charissa responded.

“Have a seat." Marissa said, motioning for Charissa to sit in the chair.

Charissa was now in the chair facing the mirror, her hair falling naturally in front of her.

“So what did you have in mind?" Marissa asked.

“Just a trim of the ends and of the light layers I have. Nothing more than a half inch off the ends." Charissa responded.

Marissa sighed and said, “That’s it? You don’t actually need a trim though, your hair is perfectly healthy and I can’t even find a split end.

“Well then I will hold off on getting a cut until then, I’m not very adventurous with my hair, I love it the way it is." Charissa said.

“Oh ok, well then let me at least shampoo you up and style it so you get something out of your visit here. Do you have time?" Marissa asked.

Charissa looked at her watched and responded, “Yeah, that sounds great actually."

Marissa walks Charissa over to the shampoo sink and gets the entire gorgeous mane into the sink. She drenches it with water and then shampoos it. Marissa works the shampoo into the hair as Charissa starts to relax and close her eyes. After a few minutes of a scalp massage, Marissa rinses Charissa’s hair and they walk back over to the styling station.

Marissa blows dry, straightened, and treated Charissa’s hair with a special aloe that made her hair even more silky smooth and shiny. Her thick blonde mane fell to her belt loop and she looked like she was a cutout from a Pantene advertisement.

“Ok, I just gotta ask you." Marissa said.

“Ask me what? My hair has never looked this good, if that’s what you mean." Charissa responded, half confused.

“Not that, though I am glad you like it." Marissa said, stalling.

“Then what?" Charissa asked.

“Would you ever consider being a hair model for me?" Marissa asked.

“What would I have to do?" Charissa asked.

“Well…Um, you’d have to cut your hair." Marissa said, scared.

“No thanks, I wouldn’t want to do anything more than a trim, I’d be a bad hair model, I’m sorry." Charissa replied.

“It’s ok, I could pay you though, if that helps." Marissa pleaded.

“I still don’t think so, I really don’t want my hair short, I’m sorry." Charissa responded.

After about 5 seconds of silence Charissa asked, “Why do you need a hair model?"

“Well, business has been slow so I want to do an advertising campaign, ‘New Year, New Look.’ And I thought, if I got a model with hair like yours and gave you a great makeover, everyone would want to go to my salon." Marissa responded.

“How would that help business?" Charissa asked.

“The way I see it, if YOU are willing to get a new haircut from me, any woman would be glad to get a cut from me." Marissa replied.

“I am flattered you think I’d be great at that, but I’ve never modeled before, I wouldn’t know what to do." Charissa said.

“That’s fine." Marissa responded. “I would just be taking simple pictures, nothing crazy."

“Hmm, I still think no, I’m sorry." Charissa said. Then almost immediately after responded with, “How much hair would you have to cut?"

“A lot. I don’t want to say…I’ll feel bad. Your hair is too gorgeous." Marissa responded.

“Well I’d have to know in order to give it any thought." Charissa said.

“Oh ok, well…Uhh, maybe around your shoulders?" Marissa said, almost flinching.

“Whoa, that is a lot, I can’t do that." Charissa said.

“Before you say that, I am offering $1,000 for the makeover." Marissa said.

“Wow, that would cover my rent and would be great to have that extra money to help pay my credit card." Charissa responded.

Marissa asked, “So what do you think?"

“I’ve seriously never cut my hair, this would be huge." Charissa responded.

“I know, I totally understand. But just know that your hair can be donated and we can make it a fundraiser throughout the office where people donate to the cause." Marissa said.

“Where would the money be donated?" Charissa asked.

“A charity called ‘Cuts for Cancer’. Basically a charity that helps kids with no money get wigs and raises money." Marissa replied.

“So I would get a thousand dollars and the charity would get what besides my hair?" Charissa asked.

“They’d get whatever the office donates to the cause." Marissa replied.

“Ok. I’ll tell you what, since you want this for New Years and tomorrow is the last day of work before then, if the office can raise $5,000 dollars by the end of the day, you can cut my hair." Charissa said, thinking that it wouldn’t happen and if it did, it would be for a great cause.

“Sounds like a deal to me, I’ll send an email out to the office for donations to the ‘Haircutting Party.’" Marissa said.

“Haircutting party?" Charissa asked.

“Yeah, people are going to want to see that you cut your hair, so we have to do it in front of the donors." Marissa replied.

“Oh god, that’s scary, but I understand. Deal." Charissa said.

“Great, I’ll send out the email now." Marissa said, “Thanks so much for doing this."

“Nothing’s happened yet, but I gotta get back to work. See you later." Charissa said.

“Bye!" Marissa said, giddy.

Charissa walked back to her chair at the front desk and Lauren was in awe of how beautiful her hair looked.

“CHARISSA! Holy crap, your hair looks incredible!" Lauren said.

“Thank you, Marissa does great work." Charissa replied, not saying anything about her maybe cutting her hair.

About 5 minutes later, the email arrived saying:

URGENT! Charissa, the office’s resident Pantene model is going to cut her hair (maybe)! There is a catch though; we need to raise $5,000 dollars by tomorrow for Cuts for Cancer in order for her to do it. Since we close early tomorrow because of the holiday, the $5,000 dollars needs to be earned by 3:00PM or no cut occurs. All donors will be able to sit and watch the “New Year, New Look" transformation as Charissa’s golden tresses are cut for charity. The cut will begin promptly at 4:00PM after the office is closed. Any donations will help, and remember, this is for a great cause and Rapunzel Charissa is cutting the most gorgeous hair on earth for the first time ever to make this happen.

Thank you,

Marissa – Shear Bliss Hair Studio

“OH MY GOD, CHARISSA!!! YOU’RE GONNA CUT YOUR HAIR?!?!" Lauren screamed exuberantly.

“Haha, only if we raise enough money, calm down." Charissa responded.

Just then Marissa comes out of her studio to drop off a donation bucket. For the next two hours, workers in the office and guests to the office were dropping in 50’s and 100’s, filling up the bowl.

At 5, Marissa counted the cash to be at only $2,000. Well short of the goal, but still a hefty amount to be donated to charity.

As everyone left, Marissa screamed, “Dig deep into your pockets folks, make tomorrow a great day!"

And with that, everyone went home, including a very unsure Charissa. The entire 20-minute drive home, Charissa couldn’t help but look in her review mirror at her perfect mane. She knew that they still needed to raise $3,000 dollars, but she figured they would do it because there are some heavy hitters in her office suite.

Once she got home, she brushed her long hair, put it up, and tried to go to sleep. She simply could not stay asleep as she was super anxious for tomorrow. She kept talking herself into it and how she needed the money and so much money was going to a great cause. That eased her nerves a little bit but the thought of scissors touching her perfect silk was nauseating to her.

Charissa finally woke up at 7 o’clock to shower and get ready for the day. She shampooed her hair for the last time, very slowly, as to savor the last moments of her hair. She hopped out of the shower and looked at herself naked. She saw that she was in perfect shape and had the perfect hair, she was actually happy with herself. She began to think of ways out of it, like not making her hair look good so people wouldn’t donate, but then she decided that wasn’t fair and she was going to get a cut if the money was raised because that’s what she agreed to do.

She never did her hair before work and always dressed well, but never to draw attention. Today, she wanted that to change because she wanted to feel pretty with her long, luxurious hair, one last time.  She put on a tight fitting dress that contrasted beautifully with her hair and looked great with her gorgeous blue eyes. She even decided to wear makeup today, because she wanted to look good for photos. Charissa put on Eyeliner to accentuate the eyes and a beautiful red lipstick to match her red high-heeled shoes. Now it was time do her hair, the part she had been avoiding. She curled her hair lightly to the point where it just looked spectacular, so shiny that you could a almost see a reflection.

It was now 8:30, time to go to work. Getting back into her car, she again stared at herself in the mirrors. She got to work in what felt like a blink and took the elevator to the 3rd floor of the office suite where she worked.

When she walked in, everyone was already there in anticipation. There was even one of those red thermometers showing how much more money needed to be earned. She looked at it puzzled because it said $7,000 dollars earned.

Just then, Marissa realized Charissa walked into the door and gave a “lookin’ good whistle." The whole office stopped to look at her. They all looked on silently when they saw how she was dressed and how she did her hair.

Then Marissa shouted, “WE REACHED OUR GOAL!"

“H-h-how exactly?" Charissa asked as she became dizzy.

“Carl from finance saw the email, thought it was a great cause and just donated the full amount last night before going on vacation." Marissa said.

“So he’s not even going to see it?" Charissa asked, still confused.

“We said we’d video it for him." Marissa replied.

“Oh my god, I can’t believe I’m cutting my hair…Let’s just do this before I pass out." Charissa said with a half smile.

“We have to wait until 4, Marissa said, “That’s when everyone is expecting it."

“Holyyy shit, I have to wait all day. Ok, ok…I’ll be fine, I’ll just work and forget about it." Charissa said.

That was nearly impossible. All day people were either telling her how gorgeous her hair was or taunting her with phrases like, “snip, snip."

Then Marissa came out with 4 other men carrying her salon chair.

“What are you doing?" Charissa asked.

“Oh, we gotta move my chair to the kitchen, too many people want to see to do it in my small studio." Marissa replied.

Charissa let out a trembling sigh and said, “Oookay. At least there’s only an hour to close."

“Yep, and in a little over two hours, you’ll have short hair." Marissa said smiling.

Charissa’s face went blank and she went back to work. The hour went by in a flash and it was now 3PM. The office doors were shut and just the donors were left, about 20 people, mostly women with hair envy.

Charissa was sitting at the front desk playing solitaire, listening to women talk about her hair, to try and pass the time as Marissa and Lauren set up the kitchen to be a salon. At 3:15, she was invited into the pseudo-salon.

Early, she thought to herself, but kind of a relief because she was just getting more and more anxious.

She walks in and sees the kitchen completely transformed. The chair was right in the middle and the people were funneling in all around, fighting for the best angle. She walked in slowly and had a seat on the chair, looking around anxiously.

“Where are you going to wash my hair?" Charissa asked.

“I bought special new scissors for this occasion, they’re for use on dry hair. Should be fun." Marissa said with a keen smile.

“Of course." Charissa said, realizing there’s no mirror.

They sat around just talking for the next 55 minutes, building and building anticipation as people took photos of the hair as she twirled it in her fingers. Finally it was 5 minutes to four and it all became more real. Charissa wanted the minutes to just stand still, but they refused, the minute hand on the clocked continued to tick away. 2 minutes to four, a gorgeous charcoal gray cap was draped over her, making her blonde hair look even more amazing in contrast with the cape.

“4 o’clock!" Screamed Beth, a woman with clear hair envy.

Lauren flipped on the video camera and everything was ready to go. Charissa sat there with a blank stare, attempting to smile as Marissa brushed out her stunning, wavy mane. No kinks, just shiny, wavy, perfection.

With that, the hairbrush was put down and the scissors were picked up. Everyone picked up their camera phones even though it was being recorded, and Charissa swallowed hard in fear and anticipation.

“Here we go, Charissa, no turning back now." Marissa said as she cut straight across right at her shoulders.

Charissa felt a tug and heard the loudest shiiiink she had ever heard in her life. 16 inches of waves fell helplessly to the ground. More and more hair fell as Marissa kept cutting. The entire audience was silent with their mouths open; they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. Teary-eyed Charissa looked back to see how much hair was cut and then felt how much hair was left. She turned ghost white, she was petrified but Marissa kept going. She kept cutting and cutting until her hair was just below her chin. Then she cut some very sexy side bangs that fell right in front of her eye. Charissa looked incredible, in fact, some thought even better than before.

Finally after what felt like an eternity, Charissa was able to look in the mirror, and when she did, she smiled.

“This can’t be me!" Charissa said.

“What do you mean? Do you like it?" Marissa responded.

“I actually love it, I feel like I can see my face now!" Charissa replied.

“I’m glad you like it." Marissa said.

“Well thank you, Marissa. And thank all of you for donating, this was truly a memorable experience." Charissa said.

With that Charissa and the rest of the office gang left and went home for New Years.

“Hey Marissa!" Charissa exclaimed before getting into her car.

“Yeah?" Marissa yelled back.

“Thanks again for the cut, I love it…Also, I’m going to be sending my sister in for a new cut. Now that I did it, she can man up to!" Charissa said smiling.

“Hair like yours I hope?" Marissa said back.

“Well, it’s a little longer than my hair used to be, but red." Charissa replied.

Barely able to contain herself Marissa said, “Bring her in!"
