Kara was 34 and worked as a nurse at the local hospital. She had chestnut colored hair that skimmed her shoulder blades. She got it trimmed once every other month, as she had been doing since she was about 6. The thought never occurred to her to try something else. Nobody ever told her to, and she never thought about it. Kara had to work the night shift this week, and she got off work at about 6 in the morning. One morning after work she looked at her reflection in her car rearview mirror and decided that she needed a haircut. Then she thought, maybe I should try something new. Something shorter perhaps? It might be nice to have a change. Nothing drastic though, she decided. As she was driving through town, the stores all looked asleep. None of them would open for another few hours. But then she noticed a bright fluorescent lighted OPEN sign up ahead. She slowed down as she got closer. She looked inside the single store with lights on and realized that it was a barber shop. There were only two people inside. They both looked like women. They were sweeping the floor and preparing for their first customers. Kara then had an idea to stop and have her hair cut at the barber shop. Why not, she thought to herself. The barbers were both women, and the town was empty, so no one would see her in a barber shop. It would probably be cheaper than a salon anyways. She parked her car and got out. She walked into the barber shop and was greeted by the two barbers. One of them looked to be about sixty and the other around fifty years old. "Welcome to Gloria's Barber Shop. I'm Gloria and this is Fran." Said the older of the two women. "What can we do for you?" She asked. "Well, I need a haircut." Kara said. "Great." Gloria said. "Have a seat and we'll get started." Kara walked over and took a seat in one of the big red leather barber's chairs. Gloria ripped a tissue off of a dispenser and asked Kara to hold her hair off of her neck for a moment. She tied the tissue very tightly around Kara's neck then took a folded cape off of the armrest and threw it over Kara. It was very big and it covered Kara almost to her feet. Gloria tied the cape securely over the tissue then told Kara she could let her hair down. "Ok, what are we doing here?" Gloria asked as she brushed Kara's hair. "Well...." Kara paused for a moment. "Would you like to try a new look perhaps? Do you want to try a shorter style?" Gloria asked. "I was thinking about that." Kara said. "I still want some length, so I have styling options though." Gloria nodded. "How about a bob, ear length maybe, with the back shaved a bit, or a bowlcut shaved in the back would look cute too." She suggested. "Either one those styles would look great on you, and are great to show off pretty earrings and such, and you have a beautiful swan-like neck that would look good with a shaved nape." Kara wasn't so sure about having her hair up to her ears, and there was no way she wanted it shaved. "I don't know about that. "I've seen girls with short bobs like that, and I really don't like the way they look. I don't like the contrast in the back, with the back shaved. And the only girls I see with those haircuts seem to be pretty young." Kara said. Gloria nodded. "She would look marvelous in a short crop like the one you did on Dawn yesterday." Fran said. "Oh she would." Gloria agreed. "What kind of a style was it? Was it pretty short?" Kara asked concerned. "I don't want anything too short." "Oh don't worry about it dear. You'll have plenty of length to style it with. We can even show you some of the ways you can style it. You'd look splendid with a crop like hers. Just leave it to me. You'll look like a brand new woman." Kara thought about it for a moment, then said, "ok." "Great! Let's get started." Gloria said. She picked up a pair of scissors and started cutting. She started in the back, at the base of Kara's nape, and was cutting off chunks of hair. Soon Kara's head felt a lot lighter, and she didn't feel any hair on her neck. Kara could not see how much she was cutting, but she figured her hair would probably be around chin length. She felt the scissors cutting hair all over her head, so she figured that Gloria was layering her hair. About five minutes after she started, Gloria put down her scissors and said "there." Kara started to get up, but Gloria put her hand on Kara's shoulder and pulled her back into the chair. "Oh I thought you were finished." Kara said. Gloria laughed, "Oh heavens no dear, I was just getting rid of the bulk of it. It's a lot easier to cut the style when you get rid of the length." Gloria said. "Oh ok." Kara said. She settled back into the comfy barber's chair. "I've still got a ways to go, would you like a magazine or something?" Gloria offered her. "Yes, that would be nice, thank you." Kara said. Fran brought her a few magazines and placed them on the counter next to Kara. Kara picked up Cosmopolitan and flipped open the cover and started reading. She heard Gloria opening a drawer behind her and rummaging though some things. Gloria plugged something into an outlet in the wall. "I need you to bend your head forward honey. Stay still." Gloria said. Kara bent her head down a little, but she felt Gloria's hand on her head pushing it down further so that her chin was almost digging into her chest. Then Kara heard a loud POP hummmmmm. Then she felt something vibrating on her neck. The humming sound turned to a buzzing sound as the vibrations moved up the back of Kara's head. Soon hair was raining down into Kara's magazine, and she realized that Gloria was shaving her. "Stop!" Kara said. Gloria turned off the clippers and asked what was wrong. "I didn't want you to cut my hair that short. I thought it was going to be chin length or something." Kara said. "I'm sorry dear, you should have stopped me when I was taking off the length. It was shorter than chin length before I started shaving you." Gloria said. "There's nothing I can do about it now, the back is already shaved up to the top." Kara sighed. She couldn't cry. She was too old for that. She wouldn't be a baby. It's just hair, after all. "Is there anything you can do to fix it?" Kara asked. "I can leave the top longer, but it would really look better if you let me go ahead and finish it the way I planned to." Gloria said. Kara nodded. "Ok, just finish it then." she said. "Don't worry honey, you'll look so great, and I promise, you'll still have enough hair to style it differently." Gloria said. Kara said, "ok." "Head down please" Gloria instructed, and she pushed Kara's chin back into her chest. Gloria switched the clippers back on and started shaving another path up the back of Kara's head. The large clippers quickly reduced the hair on the back of Kara's head, and soon Gloria lifted Kara's head up and shaved the hair on the sides. She took a comb off of the clippers and picked up a comb. She popped them back on and used the comb and clippers to shave the sides shorter. Gloria pushed Kara's chin down again and shaved the back some more. Finally, she turned them off and set them on the counter. Gloria used a spray bottle to wet down Kara's hair then she used scissors and a comb to cut the hair on top. She snipped for quite a while and lots of little wet chunks of hair fell into Kara's lap and on her face. When Gloria was sure it was all even she took out a smaller pair of clippers and plugged them in. Kara put her head down again and Gloria turned the clippers on. She slowly shaved the hair on Kara's hairline close to the skin, and shaved up only a little bit as she pulled them away from Kara's head. A few minutes later she shaved Kara's sideburns in close and tight like her hairline. When she was all done, she turned the clippers off and said, "ok, now I'll wash you." She untied the cape and tissue from Kara's neck and shook the cape out. Little hairs flew everywhere. Fran quickly swept them up while Gloria tucked a thick white towel into the collar of Kara's shirt. Gloria turned the chair the other way and reclined it so that she could wash Kara's hair in the basin. Kara thoroughly enjoyed the warm water running over her freshly cropped hair as Gloria massaged her scalp with shampoo. After Gloria rinsed out the shampoo, and used a fresh towel to dry Kara's hair. Then she worked some gel into the top and styled it while it was still a bit damp. Finally, she untucked the towel from Kara's collar and said, "there you go, all finished." She handed Kara a mirror. "I love it!" Kara exclaimed. Her hand flew up to touch her newly shown nape. "The back is tapered from about one inch at the top, and the top is around two inches at the longest parts. We can go short next time if you want." Gloria said. Kara smiled, "I'll think about it." she said.
